Sauna Kotiranta

Sauna Kotiranta is located by the Vesijärvi Lake in Lahti. The building is a modern interpretation of a beach pavilion, with a creative combination of indoor and outdoor spaces.

The site is located at the junction of steep rocks, the shoreline and a yard. The small size and sculptural shape of the building create an impression of it being an object or an artefact.

Its dark wall elements and glass walls create a sheltered indoor space while also serving as an open connection to the outdoor space. The upper window on the wall highlights the impression of a floating roof.

The roof is supported by steel pillars at four corners and two longitudinal steel beams. The roof consists of V-shaped Kerto wood beams. The walls have wooden frames. Polyurethane sheets used as insulation allow the structures to be thin.

The external walls are covered with wood panels of various widths. Their coal-toned surfaces have been treated with a tar-based wood protecting agent. Black plywood has been used for the interior panelling. The dark colour lends a sturdy appearance to the building and helps it blend into the rocky landscape.

The ceiling is made of wood strips treated with white wood wax. The light-coloured ceiling brings an air of lightness and spaciousness. The terrace planks are made of light-grey wood composite.
