Villa Nuotta

The Villa Nuotta is located on the steep northern shore of Herttuansaari island, a rocky, barren area. On the eastern side of the site, which slopes steeply down to the shoreline, there are some smooth low rocks and along the western edge there are thickets of bushes and large heaps of stones. The top of the rocky outcrop and the stones are covered with moss and lichen; there is beauty in the barrenness of the terrain.

The site is divided by a high rocky ridge running north-south and from the top of the cliff there is an unobstructed view of the lake which is part of the Natura 2000 Network.

The building is a villa for two adults, which is equipped with all modern conveniences and can be lived in all the year round. The owners spend their free time there, together or with friends. From time to time, both of them use the villa for telecommuting.

The terrain and the views provided the outline for the building which wraps round a sunny entrance courtyard. The views over the lake only become visible for the whole width of the building once you are inside. In order to preserve the fragile groundcover, the human footprint was kept as small as possible.

The upper floor, with its changes of level and varying views, is made up of overlapping indoor and outdoor spaces. As the rays of the sun drop towards the horizon, they penetrate right into the terrace. The sauna and guestroom are linked with the ground floor lower down the slope. There is a place for a summer sauna on the shoreline. The building is constructed in wood with elevations clad in dark-stained sawn boarding. Planed wood of various types is used in the interiors.
