Self-Sufficient Holiday Village in Laajasalo Wins International Architecture Award in London

Small project of the year 2024. Littow architectes and Majamaja has designed the Majamaja Off-Grid Village in Helsinki, Finland.

Majamaja Off-Grid Village is a collection of archipelago micro-homes operating 100% off-the-grid in the Helsinki archipelago, available for short-term rentals.

The prefab wooden units are built around an internationally patented off-grid module.
Majamaja’s water autonomy is ensured by rain and seawater collection, and a custom-designed purification system.

In addition, the solar and wind power energy storage system provides independence from the centralised grid.

The cabins’ inspiration comes from the living harmony between humans and nature, combining timeless aesthetics with contemporary design and featuring integrated floor storage and space-optimised fold-away furniture.

Judges comments: “This off-grid project stands out for its innovative design, optimising space while maintaining a sense of openness and serenity. Thoughtfully designed with multifunctional spaces and flexible modules, it maximises efficiency without sacrificing comfort. The project’s connection to the natural landscape further enhances its appeal, offering a sustainable, harmonious living environment.”
