Growth and use of trees

The volume of wood in Finnish forests is increasing every year. For a long time, the annual growth of standing wood has outstripped the amount that has been felled. Finnish forests contain a total of about 2.4 billion m³ of wood.

For many years now, the annual growth of standing wood has exceeded 100 million m³. Trees only grow in Finland during the growing season, which lasts about 100 days. In the 2016 growing season, the growth in standing wood was 109,9 million m³, so the average daily growth was over 1 million m³.

The volume of standing wood has been growing strongly. One hectare of forest contains an average of 111 m³, whereas as recently as the 1970 that figure was only 75 m³.
