Forest ownership

The private sector owns 60% of the area of forests, the state 26% and the forest industry 9%. The remaining 5% is split between municipalities, parishes, forest collectives and other organisations.

The volume of wood is about 2.4 billion m³. The forests’ carbon sequestration store is 960 million tonnes. The whole country contains 1,3 million hectares (6,6%) of strictly protected forests. There are a total of 2,247 endangered species in Finland, 814 for which the forest is the primary living environment and 104 for which it is swampland.

There are 443,800 private forest plots covering at least two hectares of forest. The average size of the plots is 23.6 ha. There are estimated to be over 600,000 private forest owners.
