Species of trees

In Finland, 97% of the trees in forests are either pine, spruce or birch. Half the forests are pine forests. All in all about 30 different species of tree grow in Finland. Most Finnish forests are mixed forests, meaning that more than one species of trees grow in them.

In terms of botanical geography, most of Finland belongs to the northern coniferous forest belt. Only the Åland Islands and the south-western part of mainland Finland belong to the mixed forests of the temperate belt. In the northern coniferous forest belt, the soil is oligotrophic and acidic, and only a few species of tree make up the forests.
